While accounts say that Gopher made his first appearance
in 1977 in "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh", it
seems he did appear in previous Winnie the Pooh
features. In 1966 in "Winnie the Pooh and the
Honey Tree", and in 1968 in "Winnie the Pooh and the
Blustery Day", we find Gopher in both movies.
Not
an original character from A.A. Milne's books, Gopher
was introduced by Disney. Gopher even states in
"The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh", "I'm not in
the book, you know."
With
a habit of whistling out his "s", Gopher pops up from
time to time to pay Pooh and his other friends a visit.
Gopher is hard-working, especially when it comes to his
tunnels, which he usually falls down in at least once.
Like Rabbit and Owl, Gopher's a living animal.
